This time of year, someone asks us almost every week if they should just rent a machine from the grocery store instead. It's a fair question, and the answer isn't always "hire us."
When renting makes sense
Rental machines are fine for some jobs:
- One small room or a single fresh spill
- A quick touch-up between professional cleanings
- Carpet that's getting replaced soon anyway
- You've got a free Saturday and don't mind the work
Where rentals fall short
The biggest difference is suction. A rental runs off a regular household outlet, and it can't pull water back out of the carpet the way bigger professional equipment can. That leads to a few problems:
- Wetter carpet. It can take a day or more to dry. Carpet that stays wet too long can start to smell, or show brown spots as dirt wicks up from below.
- Soap left behind. Most people use more solution than the bottle calls for. Whatever doesn't get rinsed out stays in the carpet and attracts dirt, so it looks dingy again within a few weeks.
- Lukewarm water. A lot of rental machines rely on hot tap water instead of heating it. Hotter water does a better job breaking down oily soil.
What it actually costs
Rentals usually run around $35 to $45 for the day, and the cleaning solution is another $15 to $25 a bottle. A whole house often takes two or three bottles, plus a pet formula if you need one. By the time you're done you've usually spent $80 to $120 and most of a Saturday. Most whole-home professional cleanings in Lehi land somewhere between $150 and $350, so the gap is smaller than people expect.
If you do rent one
- Vacuum really well first. The machine isn't built for dry dirt.
- Use the amount of solution the bottle says, or a little less. Never more.
- Do two or three dry passes (suction only) for every wet pass.
- Finish with a pass of plain water to rinse the soap out.
- Test a hidden spot first, especially on wool or older carpet.
- Run fans and crack the windows until it's dry.
Fall is a good time either way
Whether you rent or call someone, October and early November are a great time to get it done. You can still open the windows to help it dry, it's before snow and mag chloride season starts, and the carpet looks fresh for the holidays. Once the roads get salty, entryways and hallways pick up dirt fast.
